First, coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine contributes to acid reflux by relaxing the barrier between your stomach and the esophagus. This allows more acid to make it up into your esophagus. This is what causes the feeling of heartburn.

Second, coffee is acidic. Since stomach acid causes heartburn, food and drink that is acidic is going to make the situation worse.

Does that mean you can’t drink coffee at all?

You may be able to still drink coffee and steer clear of heartburn if you do an assessment of your coffee consumption.

You will want to evaluate two things: quantity and the type of coffee you are drinking.

Reduce Quantity, Reduce Coffee Heartburn

The first, quantity, might be the most important. Some people (like me!) drink a lot of coffee.

If you want to avoid cutting coffee completely out of your life, you’re going to have to cut back. Anyway, do you really enjoy your sixth cup of the day that much anyway?

Also look at drink sizes. It used to be that a “cup of coffee” meant 4-6 ounces. If you’re stopping at the coffee shop, you’re walking out with 12-24 ounces in a paper cup.

You just need to cut back. You might get headaches for awhile, but they will go away soon enough. The trade off for heartburn relief will be worth it!

Check the Roast and Variety of the Coffee

The second thing to do is to check the type of coffee you are drinking. There are dark roasts and light roasts.

Light roasts contain more caffeine than dark roasts. Since caffeine causes acid reflux, you are better off sticking to the darker roasts to keep heartburn away.

Also check the variety of the coffee bean. Some beans are less acidic than others.

The key will be finding the right mix for you. Maybe you can eliminate your heartburn by just cutting back, or maybe you will need to tweak both.

These exercises include somersaults, forward rolls and other exercises that require you to be upside down.

If you experience heartburn during nighttime or when you are about to go to sleep, the most likely culprit would be your bed. Elevate your body position when you sleep with pillows in order to make gravity work for you by keeping stomach acid inside the stomach.

These are the common causes of heartburn. As you can see, there are ways on how you can prevent heartburn from happening or at least manage it effectively. It’s just a matter of making small lifestyle modifications, such as changing your diet and exercise routines.

It’s bedtime but you can’t sleep because of heartburn. If you’ve been there you know it makes for a long, miserable night.

What can you do to stop this happening again and again? Some of the best advice in life is simple, so let’s start with 4 completely obvious, but amazingly helpful ways to prevent heartburn at night.

1. Avoid Large (to Huge) Meals at Dinner to Prevent Heartburn at Night

The first obvious tip is to avoid eating large meals for dinner. You have to remember that big meals mean that the stomach has to work harder to digest the food you eat.

This will also mean that the stomach will take a lot longer to digest what you eat. You stomach produces acid to digest this food. So the more food you eat, the more acid your stomach makes.

Prevent Heartburn at Night

People are more prone to experience heartburn during the night when they lie down. This is because when we lie down, it’s easier for the acid to reach our esophagus because gravity will no longer be of any help when we are lying down.

You don’t want all of this action in your stomach toward the end of the day.

2. Don’t Go to Bed on a Full Stomach

As much as it stinks getting hungry right before bed, you never want to eat a meal right before bedtime.

If you go to bed on a full stomach, your chances of nighttime heartburn increases. You need to allow your stomach at least 3 hours before you turn in.

Along those same lines, try to avoid laying down right after dinner. Stay upright to allow your body a change to digest.

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs due to the coexistence of several medical and lifestyle conditions.

Physiological factors that trigger GERD include lower esophageal sphincter (LES) hypotonia (the gradual weakening of the LES), along with retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, and the level of sensitivity of the esophageal mucus to the reflux content.

How Does the LES Cause Acid Reflux?

The food that you swallow travels down your throat and is pushed by contractions of the muscular esophagus.

In the area where the esophagus joins the stomach a valve-like mechanism, known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is located.

The closure of this muscle prevents stomach acid from backing up, or refluxing, into the esophagus.

LES malfunction is the first factor that causes and contributes to gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

In a healthy individual, the LES relaxes only when food passes from the esophagus into the stomach.

After the food passes into the stomach, the valve shuts off, keeping the stomach content and acid inside.

However, when the LES is weak and doesn’t close properly, acid can splash up into your throat causing painful burning sensation, called heartburn.

Factors That Contribute to Acid Reflux

There are several factors/conditions, which can prevent the LES from being closed properly.

These factors/conditions include genetic weakness, obesity and excessive fat ingestion. In addition to that, all muscles in the human body tend to sag as part of the aging process, including the LES.

The second factor, or rather the group of factors that causes gastro-esophageal reflux disease, are behavioral and lifestyle related. As mentioned above, a weakened LES is one of the direct physiological causes of acid reflux disease.

Foods to Avoid

Various food ingredients, drugs and nervous system processes can weaken this muscle, thus contributing to GERD.

Causes of Heartburn

Foods that may contribute to acid reflux include orange juice, lemons and lemonade, grapefruit juice, tomatoes and tomato juice, French fries, sour cream, coffee and tea.

Acid reflux can also be the result of fungal yeast infection that builds up in the colon.

When Candida albicans turn from yeast to fungi, they depress the immune system and produce more than 79 distinct toxins that may be responsible for many of the symptoms that Candida sufferers have including heartburn.
